Vitamin D3: what it does, the forms, and how much

Veeey Pharmacy Team

Egypt gets plenty of sun, and vitamin D deficiency is still common here. Indoor work, covered clothing and sunscreen all reduce how much your skin actually makes.

What it does

Vitamin D behaves less like a vitamin and more like a hormone. Its best-established role is helping your body absorb calcium and phosphate from food, which is why it appears in almost every conversation about bone health. Receptors for it also turn up in muscle and immune tissue, which is where most of the newer research sits.

D3 or D2?

D3 (cholecalciferol)
The form your skin makes from sunlight, and the form in most supplements. Generally the better studied of the two at raising and holding blood levels.
D2 (ergocalciferol)
Plant and fungal in origin. Still effective, and the usual choice in strictly vegan products.

If a label just says "vitamin D", check the ingredients panel — it will name one or the other.

Why K2 is so often beside it

Vitamin D increases how much calcium you absorb. Vitamin K2 is involved in where that calcium ends up — supporting its deposition in bone. That is the reasoning behind the combined D3 + K2 products you see everywhere. It is a sound rationale, though the long-term clinical picture is still developing.

Important: vitamin K interacts with warfarin and similar anticoagulants. If you take a blood thinner, do not start a K2 product without talking to your doctor first.

Reading the strengths on the shelf

D3 is measured in international units (IU) or micrograms (mcg); 40 IU equals 1 mcg. Products on our shelves are commonly labelled at strengths such as 1,000 IU, 2,000 IU, 5,000 IU and 10,000 IU per capsule, plus weekly and monthly high-strength forms usually dispensed on a doctor's instruction.

Those are label strengths, not a recommendation. The right amount for you depends on your blood level, your weight, the season and what else you take — which is exactly why the next section exists.

Test rather than guess

A 25-hydroxyvitamin D blood test is inexpensive and widely available in Egypt. It tells you whether you have a shortfall at all, and gives your doctor a starting point. Because D3 is fat-soluble, it accumulates in the body — so unlike vitamin C, "a bit extra just in case" is not harmless over long periods.

Re-testing after a few months is how you find the amount that keeps you in range, rather than staying on a high-strength product indefinitely.

Getting it absorbed

  • It is fat-soluble, so most people take it with the meal of the day that contains some fat.
  • Softgels suspended in oil, drops and tablets all work; the choice is mostly about preference and swallowing.
  • Check the expiry date. Potency declines over time, which is why we show the exact date on every listing rather than a vague "best before".

Price per month, not price per box

A 5,000 IU bottle of 60 and a 1,000 IU bottle of 90 are not comparable on shelf price. Our listings show the per-unit price so you can compare honestly.
